Fundação José Saramago

Museum

José Saramago, who lived from 1922-2010, is one of the most famous writers in Portugal and this elegant casa contains a small museum that is dedicated to him.

This beautiful building was constructed in the 16th century and was inspired by Italian Renaissance architecture.

Known for his humorous and cynical novels, Saramago won the Nobel Prize in 1998. His novels are essential reading for anyone interested in Portuguese culture and they can be found in nearly any local bookshop. The museum reveals his interesting life story and insights into his inspirations.

Outside of the museum there is an olive tree which was taken from his birthplace in Azinhaga. The ashes of the great writer lie within the shade of the tree. This building also features a ground floor excavation of Roman ruins that you can view for free.
