A lovely square in downtown Lisbon, Largo do Carmo is famous for its calm and laid back atmosphere. It offers a gorgeous view of the city, as well as an interesting museum and a historic elevator right in the heart of Lisbon.
The square is surrounded by charming narrow streets, cosy local restaurants and charming apartment buildings painted in bright colours.
Although this square is calm and peaceful today, it wasn’t always that way. In 1974 it was a military barracks where the totalitarian rulers finally surrendered to a revolution.
Within this square you will also find the Carmo Convent, a stunning church that was constructed in the 14th century. It was almost completely destroyed by the 1755 earthquake, but the partially standing ruins are quite beautiful and add a lot of atmosphere to the square.
