Dr. Pedro Van Der Laan, together with José Thomaz Sousa Martins and Barão Kessler, created this fascinating zoo in Lisbon in 1884. It was the first park with fauna and flora of the Iberian Peninsula. An incredible variety of animal species can be seen here, including 114 mammals (including brown bears, elephants and tigers), 56 reptiles and 157 species of birds.
The zoo gives you an opportunity to travel around the world without leaving Lisbon, as it recreates several different habitats from all corners of the globe. You can see the chimpanzees and gorillas in the African exhibit, explore Madagascar to see lemurs and even kiss a sea lion in the California ecosystem. Children will love the zoo train, a fun way to see as much of the park as possible on a family day out.
